The shocking truth is that there are people who consider themselves normal who would do this.

These fishermen should be found and skewered with fishhooks and used for bate.

It took my breath away, and what in the world is the purpose - to catch a shark?

I wonder if these are the people who cut off the fin for shark fin soup and let the sharp swim away to die without a fin.

not to put on my vegetarian cap, but's what's the difference between what goes on in a slaughterhouse with a cow or pig and the puppy?

totally. i thought the same thing but didn't say it. truly, no difference. the knowing wisdom in a cow's eyes is the same except that they're surrounded by succulent flesh. seeing a pig scream in fear is absolutely gut wrenching.

I kind of smell a hoax here. Snopes rates it "undetermined" and raises some alarms:

that would figure, saw it on drudge, but i'm skeptical of a lot of the stuff he posts anway. either way, that's a live dog with a huge painful hook through it's mouth. yuck. poor guy.

i hope it's a hoax. that picture still shook us to the core at the end of the day.

The difference here is that the dog would be alive in horrible pain and fear while being dragged in the water, pulled by a hook being chomped on by a shark.Essentially tortured. The shark is alive in horrible pain, swimming with a fin hacked off until it dies or is killed by another preditor.

Even carnivores kill their prey effectively before eating it. I believe that most slaughter houses try to quickly and efficiently kill the animals before they are butchered.

The most frightening video that I've seen lately was a clip about the fur industry. They were skinning the animals alive. THAT gave me nightmares.

I agree with Scott, though. A dog with a big hook through the nose would be a pretty mangled mess. I think that this picture might be a PhotoShop product. But...it does make you think.

I don't think it's a photoshop doc - that's definitely a dog with a hook. I think the "story" about using them for shark fishing could be the hoax.

Regardless, I've read enough that I know for certain there are more than a few slaughterhouses, chicken coups, fur skinners, etc. that don't effectively create a comfy last breath.

I think you're right that at least, it should be the intent of the forementioned to do so humanely, but that in actual practice it is often a truly dreadful mess.

Did a little bit of research and this is a good site regarding the doggy shark bait story. http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/sharkbait.asp

Seems that there are some half truths in the story. These fishermen do use dead animals and road kill for bait.

I still can't imagine a dog walking around with a hook through its nose without it becoming inflamed, swollen, bloody and torn. This dog looks like the hooks were done by a local body piercing studio.

I just threw up at that image. Literally. Ran to the bathroom and vomited. I am heartbroken to hear about this.
